Plot Summaries

Summary of the first series of Car Share.


Series 1, Episode 1 -

John and Kayleigh work a the same supermarket and start a new car sharing scheme together, paring them together in their daily commute to and from work. This leads them to learning more about each other's background, which is what the episode circles around. However, their is an unfortunate but hilarious incident with Kayleigh's sample bottle of urine which inevitably spills on John. Despite their rocky start, they decide to continue car sharing.


Series 1, Episode 2 -

Due to the death of a long standing colleague at the supermarket, John and Kayleigh are forced to take the morning off work. This leads to Kayleigh be-friending her elderly neighbour, Ken which becomes an interesting topic when Kayleigh misunderstands the meaning of "dogging".

Series 1, Episode 3-

Kayleigh suffers from a late night partying as she worries about her self taught Japanese that she needs to perfect for her lunchtime date with a Japanese man she has connected with over an on-line dating agency. This leads to John's love life becoming under scrutiny.

Series 1, Episode 4 -

Kayleigh is boasting about the Beyoncé concert she is attending while John is excited about his new hands-free kit. A trip to the car wash is a result to John's road rage at a school crossing and Kayleigh falls out with a colleague leading to some consequences in the commute home with John.

Series 1, Episode 5 -

John fights to get his Nan's birthday card in the post during his ride to work so that she gets it in time while Kayleigh has agreed to take her niece and nephew to school. To make matters worse Kayleigh is distracted by a colleagues interest in John and bad news from her brother while she is tasked with driving an injured John home. Unfortunately, the day gets even worse after the car breaks down.

Series 1, Episode 6 -

 It is the day of Kayleigh and John's last car share together and Kayleigh has a lot on her mind. The fact that National Jam week has occurred and Kayleigh has to dress as a black current doesn't help. Luckily John offers his support which leads Kayleigh to ponder whether she will miss the commutes to and from work with John. The episode ends with an awkward exchange of gifts.

Why is the show so appealing

Overall, the show offers numerous amount of audience pleasures. The main ones are pleasures of familiarity, narrative pleasures and Transgressive pleasures like Schadenfreude and Voyeurism. Pleasures of familiarity comes from Peter Kay's numerous comedic roles in sitcoms like 'Phoenix Nights' and 'That Peter Kay Thing' which draw in a wider audience demographic. The narrative pleasure, especially the narrative complication and narrative resolution appears in every episode and offers the audience comedic Transgressive pleasures which focus on Schadenfreude and Voyeurism. These pleasures add to the dark and slapstick humour and also makes the audience feel more involved in the scene so it delivers pleasure to the audience. Furthermore, the sitcom is also based around observational comedy this makes it easy to laugh at and draws in a wider audience as everyone will be able to understand the humour.
