Uses of Audience Pleasures in Peter Kay's Carshare For the exam you need to be able to explain at least two different types of audience pleasures in detail. These examples of each from different episodes will help you. Narrative Resolution Episode 3 - When Kayleigh and John drive away from Ray as he chases after them (creates as sense of relief after John calls him "Psycho"). Episode 5 - There have been hints of Kayleigh and John getting together throughout series but in this episode it shows Kayleigh being jealous of Rachel who is hitting on John and John who is jealous of the trolley wrangler that Kayleigh likes. TV Comedy Through The Keyhole Through the Keyhole is a British TV comedy panel show hosted by Keith Lemmon (Leigh Francis). The panel show, shows Keith Lemmon going through celebrity homes and involves the guest panel having to guess who the house belongs to. This show is a hybrid of a quiz and panel show and was adapted from the old 1980s mainstream 'through the keyhole' that was less comedic and more serious. By mocking the old show, Keith Lemmon brings in a bigger audience demographic and makes the programme appeal more to a modern audience. Who commissioned the programme? Katz' Uses and Gratification Theory What is it? The uses and gratification theory explains why audiences are driven  to consume most media product. Most media theorists agree it is because they need to fulfil certain needs. Katz' uses and gratification theory explains these needs by splitting them into four different categories. These include: personal identification , personal relationship , inform and educate and diversion . The Theory Personal Identification - Where the audience can relate to a character or their situation Personal Relationship - Where the audience builds a close bond with a character or group of characters Inform and Educate - Where the audience learn something from consuming the text Diversion - Where the audience can escape from their reality and immerse themselves in the text

TV Comedy Narrative Pleasures: A narrative is a spoken or written account of connected events with a beginning, middle and end. The Narrative Abstract- It is the initial summary of the story, typically in the title of the text and at times in an opening section. It provides the first decision point for the audience about continuing to watch the programme. The Narrative Orientation- It establishes time and place, social context of the narrative. The Narrative Complication- Represents an issue that the characters at the climax of the narrative. The Narrative Resolution- Will provide an answer to the complication. The BBC is the world's oldest national broadcasting organisation and is based at the broadcasting house in London. What audience is it aimed at? Why? It is aimed at a young adult/adult audience in the audience demographic categories of: B, C1, C2 and D. This is because of the narrative pleasures within the programme that would only appeal to a  working and middle class audience. A way of 'dividing' a population into different groups; for example: age, gender ethnicity, income, education, class etc.   What are the audience Demographic Categories? A    - Higher management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and other professionals B    - Middle management, teachers, creative and media people, e.g. Graphic designer etc. C1 - Office supervisors, junior managers, nurses, specialists clerical staff - white collar. C2 - Skilled manual workers, plumbers, builders - blue collar. D   - Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers E    - unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers.
