Uses of Audience Pleasures in Peter Kay's Carshare
For the exam you need to be able to explain at least two different types of audience pleasures in detail. These examples of each from different episodes will help you.
Narrative Resolution
- Episode 3 - When Kayleigh and John drive away from Ray as he chases after them (creates as sense of relief after John calls him "Psycho").
- Episode 5 - There have been hints of Kayleigh and John getting together throughout series but in this episode it shows Kayleigh being jealous of Rachel who is hitting on John and John who is jealous of the trolley wrangler that Kayleigh likes. This suggests that they might soon get together (the resolution).
Identifying with Characters
- Episode 2 - John is unable to control is hysterical laugh after Kayleigh talks to her neighbour about "dogging" not knowing what it really means.
- Episode 3 - Kayleigh is hung-over and creating lots of noise so a neighbour stands by their window watching them.
- Episode 3 - John calls Kayleigh "Carol Decker" which is a reference to the 80s (adds to audience demographic)
- Episode 3 - John and Kayleigh trying the avoid Ray and hoping he won't see them
Snowballing Narrative
- Anecdotes about John's love life
- Kayleigh's on line dating is asked about often
By talking about both their love lives their is a hint that they might get together (excites and intrigues audience)
Suspense
- Episode 3 - John and Kayleigh wait for John to get in the car even though they really don't want him to
- Episode 3 - Kayleigh and John start fighting about John's last relationship (makes you wonder is they will get to together)
- Episode 3 - At the beginning of the episode John sees a women he likes in a car and waves to her. At the end of the episode, when he is driving home, he sees the same car and tries to drive closer so he can see the woman again. Makes the audience wonder if it is going to be her and if he will get to the car in time.
Verbal Comedy
- Episode 3 - person on radio asking rhetorical question "Is your career going down the wrong road" and then the next radio alert is talking about a lorry crash.
- Episode 3 - When Kayleigh and Ray swear in Japanese
- Episode 3 - "haddock" instead of headache
- Episode 3 - "crabby" and "Moby dickhead" when Kayleigh and Ray insult each other
Satire
- Episode 2 - John's name tag says "John Bishop" which is another well known comedian.
- Episode 3 - Ray calls Kayleigh "Amy Winehouse"
- Episode 3 - Ray talking about how in the store you can smell the fish before you see them and says "we've got a big problem" yet he also smells strongly of fish.
Physical Comedy
- Episode 3 - Kayleigh falling over because she is hung over
- Episode 3 - Kayleigh putting the air freshener round her next when Ray gets in the car.
- Episode 3 - John hides in a card board box so Ray doesn't see him
- Episode 5 - John falls over and injures himself when running to get to the letter box in time.
Familiarity
- John's persona, e.g. his sarcastic remarks, laugh and northern accent
- Kayleigh's persona, e.g. her high voice, singing in the car and getting words mixed up
- John's line "get out of town" which he says when he is surprised by something
- In Episode 1 John says that he "comes from Bolton" which is a reference to another show which he did, 'Phoenix Nights'.
Repetition and difference
- In most of the episodes, when John and Kayleigh get to work they see the shirtless trolley wrangler
- Episode 3 - the Japanese joke is referenced
- Repeated mentions of John's girlfriends
Performance and spontaneity/unpredictability
- Episode 3 - Ray speaking Japanese
- Episode 3 - when John sees the car again at the end of the scene the audience think that they will see the woman but there is a man in the car instead.
Transgressive Pleasures
- Episode 2 - Kayleigh not knowing what "dogging" is - Schadenfreude
- Episode 3 - Kayleigh breaks wind in the car
- Slow motion scenes of the shirtless trolley wrangler
- Being in the car and having private conversations
Specific performers/personalities
- Episode 3 - Rheece Shears, who is another comedian, plays Ray
- Peter Kay plays John and has a wide fan base
- The music video day dreams are parodies. they exaggerate the famous singers from the 80s.
